Gaby Terhuven’s compositions are based on geometric systems that she developed for the first time in drawing.
Two glass panels are painted on both sides with oil paint and then placed one behind the other with a small space in between, so that a three-dimensional impression appears.
Extension and compression, separation and coming together – in relationship between the line and the plane as well as between the pictorial layers and their intermediate spaces – leads to a vibration which contrasts with the clear forms. Therefore, it is impossible for viewers to gain a firm and understanding grip on the work despite its rational structure. In fact, they experience multiple views and an indescribable aura. This paradox combines with others which are specific to the paintings of Gaby Terhuven, of which mainly the oscillation between pure materiality and ephemeral dissolution in light, between stability and variability, robustness and fragility, clarity and delicacy, autonomy and openness. It is precisely by working with the means and principles of Constructed Art that Gaby Terhuven reveals the limits of the concrete postulate of rationality and understanding and highlights the specific truth content of painting, which is closely linked to the powers color, light and subjective perceptions.
