At the crossroads of exceptional craftsmanship and organic poetry, Sarah Walbaum shapes glass as a vibrant and living material. Her approach is based on the alchemy of glass, time and living matter, where each work comes alive in daylight to create infinite textural plays. Drawing on thirteen years of experience at the National Drama Center in Reims, she has drawn from the world of live performance a conception of “total art”, where light and space unite to tell a story and sculpt an emotion.

Her work celebrates mouth-blown sheet glass, a noble material shaped by the four elements: earth, air, water and fire. In her “Paysages” (Landscapes) collection, she seeks to erase herself as much as possible to reveal the intrinsic and organic beauty of the material. Her line is inspired by her intimate memory—the gardens of her childhood with their colorful juxtapositions—or by natural landscapes such as pine forests, frozen puddles and the Huang Shan mountains.

Each sculpture is the fruit of a dialogue between the rigor of ancestral gesture, inherited from her role as artistic and managing director of Atelier Simon-Marq, and the freedom of her own imagination. By combining glass with solid oak bases, she creates pairings of shapes and counter-shapes where colors merge through optical superposition to generate vibrant hues. Her practice is rooted in a quest for authenticity and sustainability, favoring short supply chains and absolute respect for manual labor.

This exploration is accompanied by cutting-edge technological research conducted within Verretuoses, the workshop’s innovation division. This laboratory allows her to experiment with new frontiers—water jet cutting or thermoforming—to unite the memory of centuries-old gestures with tomorrow’s imperatives. By favoring a “free form” approach and controlled chance when facing molten material, she transforms space into an unprecedented sensory experience. For Sarah Walbaum, glass is not an inert material, but a window open to pure emotion, capturing the subtle variations of sky and time.
