Hans Jörg Glattfelder studied at the University and the Kunstgewerbeschule in Zurich. In the 1960s he devoted himself to painting, following the trend of Zurich concrete art. His paintings, which are founded on the use of systems, are based on regular structures and allow him to study the interplay of colours in the pictorial field. From the observation of these visual changes, Glattfelder became more and more interested in the problems of instability of forms and their modifications (Grosser Horizont, 1982). He rediscovers the use of perspective and the illusionistic representation of the depth. By modifying the representation of the artwork’s surface, he transforms its silhouette and ends up with a shaped painting that recovers the use of the accelerated perspective.
Extract from the Larousse book « Dictionary of Painting ».
Hans Jörg Glattfelder is one of the most important contemporary figures in the field of concrete and constructive art. Following in the footsteps of the Zurich Concretists such as Bill, Graeser, Loewensberg and Lohse, Hans Jörg Glattfelder is interested in the evolution of a plastic language dedicated to clarity and by asking rational questions. His artworks, which often refer to mathematical and scientific sources, appeal and fascinate, by their intellectual interest, as well as by their aesthetic qualities.
