Ueli Gantner
- Born in 1950 in Bülach, Switzerland.
- 1966-1970 : Studied sculpture at the Zurich School of Art and in the studio of Max Strasser.
- 1970-1990 : Studies design at the College of Art and Design in Zurich. Stays in a studio in Italy.
- 1980-1990 : Teaches at design schools in St. Gallen and Bern, Switzerland.
- 1998-2008 : Senior lecturer in sculpture and sculptural design at the M-Arthaus in Suhr, Switzerland.
- 1998 : Admitted to the Zurich Artists’ Association.
- 2008 : Awarded the Culture Prize of the city of Bülach, Switzerland.
- 2010 : Nominated for the André Evard International Art Prize.
- 2013 : Nominated for the second time for the André Evard International Art Prize.
- Lives and works in Switzerland.
Ueli Gantner’s works are not to be viewed in a static manner; they must be experienced as ephemeral images! In the tradition of kinetic artists such as Jesus Rafael Soto, Julio Le Parc and Carlos Cruz Diez, Ueli Gantner plays with our sense of perception, revealing the invisible and saying the unspeakable.
These three-dimensional mural sculptures are composed of painted wooden slats that are organised in such a way as to create other shapes and other coloured « sensations » for the viewer in movement. If lozenges, circles, squares or any other geometrical shapes are physically present, often highlighted, the rhythm of the colours, the thickness of the slats, the interplay of the cuts allow other rhythms, other colours and other virtual shapes to be perceived by the simple physical movement of the viewer creating an oscillation. He often uses the golden ratio and almost exclusively the three primary colours cherished by Mondrian – blue, yellow and red – which he sometimes blends with their complementary colours – orange, green and violet – with white and black used as backgrounds or dominant colours. This chromatic simplicity serves his minimalist approach and his search for formal refinement. A disturbing, fascinating, playful and mystical piece of art!
