Giovanna Strada, a visual artist and designer born in 1960 in Ragusa, lives and works in Milan.
She studied industrial design at the Scuola Politecnica di Design in Milan, where she was taught by prominent figures such as Nino Di Salvatore, the school’s founder, Bruno Munari, a major figure in 20th-century art and design, and Gaetano Kanizsa, a leading figure in Italian experimental psychology.
From the very beginning, Strada’s work has positioned itself at the crossroads of design and concrete art, rooted in a profound exploration of visual perception and psychological analysis. Geometry and perception form the foundation of her artistic language: from a fundamental structure emerge units that are alike yet distinct, inviting the viewer to compare them. These elements interact constantly, generating a unique whole—a complex visual dynamic that unfolds within and reinvents architectural space.
In the 1990s, she initiated the series of Virtual Spaces: mural compositions where pictorial units are juxtaposed according to logical-geometrical principles, evoking latent figures. A dialogue arises between the emptiness of the wall and the volumes of the artwork. The unpainted space resonates with the painted sections, creating a perceptual exchange zone between material and immaterial spaces. The viewer’s gaze completes the figure in a process where the artwork is finalized through perception.
Since the 2000s, Strada has embraced a radical black-and-white bichromy. A base figure—rotated, reflected, translated, and repeated—gives rise to a multitude of units with distinct identities. It is in the comparison of these forms that the essence of perception lies: diversity emerging from unity. The original figure, through its specific configuration, enables the creation of complex structures deployed along horizontal and vertical grids, investing the mural space with visual density and interpretive richness. Unity, Interaction, Space are the core themes of this black-and-white exploration.
Since 2015, the artist has embarked on a new phase of her research with a second series of Virtual Spaces, titled Latent Spaces. New mathematical relationships structure her approach, opening an unprecedented field where constructive logic and cognitive processes intertwine to gradually reveal new plastic and conceptual themes.
