Alain-Jacques LEVRIER-MUSSAT’s artistic research was originally based on the enigmatic density of a blue pigment. For several years, the artist has been working on a square of light, a square with changing dimensions and scripturality. A square, like a head, like an equation, whose geometry imposed itself as the only possible drawing. Inspired at first by pure forms and the play of iridescence, he also nurtures, in the confidentiality of his studio, an interest in a « naturalism » that is far removed from concrete art.
The geometry in his work is the result of a methodical observation of reality. He thus imposes on himself a protocol that involves chemical experiments, the analysis of the constituents of matter, from the molecular to the bulbar, from the organic to the mineral.
What occupies me today, » the artist tells us, « is to go beyond the pictorial impression of colour to connect with other observable realities: the geometric, visible or invisible part of nature, the mysteries of science, a fascination for distant beliefs and for the history of art.
A key fact, at the origin of his recent work, is described in an old ornithomancy manual. This legend is perhaps the part of recovered lyricism that he has always defended himself from. For years, Alain-Jacques Levrier-Mussat painted hundreds of squares of light without really understanding why. Perhaps there was a sequence to be constructed.
For the artist, drawing a square is an ancestral ritual that allows him to circumscribe « a territory that cannot be circumscribed ».
This shape has always symbolised the finite.
Around the square, which can probably be interpreted as a sky in his work, a cosmogonic syntax now proliferates. The artist thus has the impression of making a « world » for himself. In his mind, it is arranged like a cabinet of curiosities made up of small objects with primary and initiatory forms, optical boxes and dark rooms. Through drawing or engraving, he reproduces cell sections, water crystals, fractal growths, oscilloscope rhythms… He creates installations with pyrites and other geometric stones that evoke lost territories, constellations, cosmic maps…
